Kangra Marathon 2026: Route, Time, How to Join

kangra marathon

the fit kangra 2026 marathon runs 6:00 to 7:00 am on saturday 10 october — baan ganga ghat to kachiayari and back. one hour, flat, free, and you can walk parts of it. here's the route, the timing, what to wear, and how to get your name on the list.

you read the word "marathon" and something in you went not for me.

fair. the word does a lot of damage. it sounds like forty-two kilometres, a training plan, and people whose watches beep at them.

this one is an hour. along a river. at six in the morning, with a few hundred people from kangra who mostly don't run either.

it's one session of fit kangra 2026, the three-day festival at baan ganga ghat, hosted by the Kangra district administration and led by SDM Kangra, Dr. Anjali Garg.

the festival is an anti-chitta initiative. the aim is to give young people a better high — fitness, music, dance, devotion, achievement and belonging — under the slogan Fit Youth. Positive Minds. Drug-Free Kangra. the marathon is the first thing on the schedule that most people can actually see themselves doing, which is why it opens the saturday.

it's free to join. every session is, including this one — you just register on Gigavent so the organisers know how many people to expect at a 6am start line.

the marathon is also the session people ask the most questions about. so here are the answers, in the order you'll want them.

What is the Kangra marathon route?

it's an out-and-back along the river. start at baan ganga ghat, run to kachiayari, turn around, finish back at the ghat.

the whole thing is riverside road and ghat path. flat to gently rolling — no trails, no stairs, no climbs. in himachal that's worth saying out loud, because most routes around here are not.

you get the dhauladhar on one side and the river on the other for the full hour. at six in the morning in october there's usually mist still sitting on the water, and the sun comes over the ridge somewhere around the turnaround. it is, objectively, a better hour than whatever else you had planned for saturday.

out-and-back is also the friendliest shape a route can have. you can't get lost, you always know exactly how much is left, and if you decide halfway that you've had enough, turning around early still brings you home.

What time does it start, and when should you get there?

6:00 am sharp. be at the ghat by 5:40.

this is the one session of the entire weekend where turning up late means missing it completely. the aarti will wait for you. a start line won't.

twenty minutes of buffer sounds like a lot until you're doing it. you'll want time to find parking, walk the last stretch to the ghat, leave your bag somewhere, and stand around getting cold before someone shouts go. that's exactly what 5:40 buys you.

it finishes at 7:00 am, and yoga by the river starts right there at seven. so if you're already up and already at the ghat, the decision to stay is an easy one.

kangra marathon morning timeline

Do you have to be a runner?

no. most of the people around you won't be.

you can walk parts of it, and plenty will. nobody is timing you. there are no race numbers, no finish-line clock, and nobody at the back making a note.

if you've been meaning to start running and never found a reason — this is a flat hour by a river with a few hundred other people, and it costs nothing. the barrier doesn't get much lower than that.

how to actually get through an hour if you never run

the mistake everyone makes is going out too fast because the first five minutes feel easy with a crowd around you. then you're wrecked by kilometre two and walking the rest while feeling bad about it.

run slower than feels right at the start. the rule people use is simple: if you can't say a full sentence out loud while running, you're going too fast. slow down until you can.

walk on purpose, not as a failure. run four minutes, walk one, repeat. that's a real method, not a compromise — plenty of people finish their first hour that way and it works far better than sprinting and dying.

you don't have to go all the way to kachiayari. turn around whenever you like and run back. you'll have done exactly as much as you wanted to, at the same river, with the same sunrise.

What to wear and bring

shoes you can run in. that's genuinely most of it.

a layer you can take off. october mornings in kangra are properly cold before sunrise and then warm up fast once the sun clears the ridge. whatever feels right at 5:40 will be too much by 6:40, so wear something you can tie around your waist rather than something you'll have to carry.

water. there's no guarantee of a station on a one-hour community run, so carry your own or drink before you start.

your phone, with the registration on it.

a mat, if you're staying for yoga at seven and you own one. if you don't, the ghat steps are stone and perfectly fine to sit on.

what you don't need: running tights, a watch, a training background, or anybody to come with you.

How do you get to Baan Ganga Ghat at 5:40 in the morning?

the ghat sits on the kangra bypass road below kangra town, where the river runs past the temples. the full address is baan ganga ghat, halehr khurd, kangra, himachal pradesh 176001.

it's a short ride from kangra bus stand, roughly twenty minutes from kangra airport, and about 45 minutes to an hour from dharamshala depending on the valley road.

two things about the early start. first, you won't find a bus or an auto at that hour — sort your ride out the night before, or come with someone who's driving. second, parking near the river is much easier at 5:30 than it will be that evening, when the aarti crowd arrives. the morning is the easy shift.

if you're coming from dharamshala, you're leaving around 4:45. that's a real thing to decide on, not a detail — which is the honest reason to pick the saturday evening sessions instead if the morning doesn't work.

How to join

register on Gigavent. the marathon is listed as its own session, so you can sign up for just this and ignore the rest of the weekend if that's all you want.

it's free. registering isn't about payment — it's so the organisers know how many people to expect at a 6am start line, and so the time and place sit on your phone instead of in a screenshot you'll have lost by friday.

and it keeps working after saturday. whatever else is happening near you turns up on the same screen — which is the point of it.
