18 Things to Do in Chandigarh and Places to Visit
It's Saturday. You're in Chandigarh. And you've opened your phone four times already without deciding anything.
The problem isn't that there's nothing here. It's that everyone keeps sending you the same five names, and you've already been to all five.
So here's a proper list — 18 things to do in Chandigarh, with what each one costs, when it's open, and which ones are shut on Mondays. Plus a one-day plan, the free stuff, and what to do once you've genuinely seen it all.

Entry fees, timings and closed days¶
Most Chandigarh lists skip this part. It's the part that actually ruins a day out.
| Place | Entry | Open | Closed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rock Garden | ₹30 adult, ₹10 child | 9am–6pm (Oct–Mar), 9am–7pm (Apr–Sep) | Open daily |
| Sukhna Lake | Free | 5am–8pm | Open daily |
| Capitol Complex | Free, photo ID needed | Tours 10am, 12pm, 3pm | Govt holidays |
| Government Museum | ₹10 (₹5 camera) | 10am–4:40pm | Mondays |
| Rose Garden | Free | Sunrise to sunset | Open daily |
| Sukhna boating | ₹250 for two, ₹500 for four | Daytime | Open daily |
Two things to remember:
- The Government Museum shuts on Mondays. So do most museums here. Don't plan a Monday around them.
- Capitol Complex is only half-open on weekends. More on that below, because it catches almost everyone.
Fees change. Check before you go if you're counting rupees.

Going this weekend? Fees and timings barely change. What's on changes every week — a run at the lake, a gig, a Sunday market. See what's happening in Chandigarh →
Things to do in Chandigarh¶
1. Rock Garden¶
Nek Chand built this out of broken bangles, old sockets and factory waste, in secret, for eighteen years, on land he wasn't supposed to be on. By the time the government found out, it was too big to knock down.
It's the one place in Chandigarh that feels nothing like Chandigarh. Give it two hours minimum.
₹30 · open daily · Sector 1

2. Sukhna Lake¶
The default evening plan, and it earns it. Three kilometres of walking path, a boat if you want one, and corn and chai carts at the gate.
Go at 6am if you want it quiet. Go at 6pm if you want people.
Free · boating ₹250 for two · Sector 1

3. Capitol Complex¶
Le Corbusier's government buildings — the High Court, the Assembly, the Secretariat. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it's free.

Here's the bit nobody tells you:
- You can go inside the buildings only Monday to Friday
- On Saturday and Sunday you can only see it from outside
- Tours run at 10am, 12pm and 3pm — reach 15 minutes early to register
- Carry a photo ID, or you're not getting in
So if you were saving this one for Sunday, don't.
Free with ID · Sector 1

4. Zakir Hussain Rose Garden¶
Thirty acres, more than a thousand kinds of roses, and the biggest rose garden in Asia. Free, open, and full of people doing nothing in particular — which is the point.
Best between February and March, when the Rose Festival happens and the whole thing is in bloom.
Free · Sector 16

5. Sector 17 Plaza¶
The old heart of the city. Open-air market, no traffic, and the kind of place where you go for one thing and leave three hours later.
The musical fountain runs here in the evenings. Worth timing your visit around.
Free · Sector 17

6. Elante Mall¶
One of north India's biggest malls. If it's 44°C outside or pouring, this is where the city goes. Food court, cinema, and enough space to kill an afternoon without planning anything.
Free entry · Industrial Area Phase 1

7. Government Museum and Art Gallery¶
Gandhara sculptures, Pahari miniatures, and a collection that's genuinely good for ₹10.
Closed Mondays and national holidays. Open 10am to 4:40pm. Camera ticket is ₹5 extra.
₹10 · closed Mondays · Sector 10
8. Le Corbusier Centre¶
The architect's old office, now a small museum about how Chandigarh got designed the way it did.
Quick visit — an hour is plenty. Pairs well with the Capitol Complex tour on the same morning.
Sector 19
9. Open Hand Monument¶
The city's symbol — a giant metal hand that rotates in the wind. It sits inside the Capitol Complex, so the same weekday rule applies.
Inside Capitol Complex · Sector 1
10. International Dolls Museum¶
Dolls and puppets from a few dozen countries, in Bal Bhavan. Odd, charming, and good if you've got kids along.
Sector 23
11. Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary¶
Behind the lake, up in the Shivalik foothills. Trails, birds, and actual quiet twenty minutes from Sector 17.
Carry water. There's nothing to buy once you're in.
Behind Sukhna Lake
12. The small gardens¶
Chandigarh has a garden for almost everything, and most people never visit any of them:
- Japanese Garden — Sector 31, pagodas and a waterfall
- Terraced Garden — Sector 33, musical fountain, December chrysanthemum show
- Cactus Garden — Panchkula, one of Asia's largest cactus collections
- Garden of Fragrance — Sector 36, planted entirely for smell
All free or nearly free. Pick one you haven't done.
13. Chhatbir Zoo¶
Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, about 20km out. Big, green, and a proper half-day with family.
Zirakpur road
14. Pinjore Gardens¶
A Mughal garden from the 17th century, terraced down a hillside about 22km away. Lit up in the evenings.
The Mango Festival happens here in summer.
Pinjore, Haryana
15. Mansa Devi Temple¶
One of the busiest temples in the region. Gets very full during Navratri — which is either the reason to go or the reason not to.
Panchkula
16. ISKCON Temple¶
Quiet most days, and the Sunday evening kirtan is the main draw. Free food after.
Sector 36
17. Morni Hills¶
The closest actual hills — about 45km, and the only place near Chandigarh where you get height and a view. Good half-day drive.
Got a full weekend? Chandigarh is the gateway to Himachal — Dharamshala is about eight hours up, and Bir for paragliding is closer.
Panchkula district
18. Leisure Valley and Butterfly Park¶
A green strip running through the middle of the city, with the Butterfly Park at one end. Free, and almost always empty on weekday mornings.
Sectors 1–53
Things to do in Chandigarh with friends¶
Sightseeing isn't usually what a group wants. This is:
- Escape rooms — a few around Sector 26 and Zirakpur
- Go-karting, bowling and trampoline parks — mostly Zirakpur and the Industrial Area
- Sukhna at 6am — a run or a cycle, then breakfast at the gate
- Sector 26 and Sector 9 — breweries, and the easiest Friday plan
- Morni Hills — if one of you has a car and nobody wants to stay in the city
- Chhatbir Zoo — cheap, takes a whole day, and better with a big group
Got four people and no plan? Everything above works any day. The things that happen once — a match, a bracket, a game that's one player short — are the ones worth catching. Find tournaments near you →
Things to do in Chandigarh at night¶
The city shuts earlier than Delhi, so the trick is starting earlier.
- Sector 17 musical fountain — free, evenings, and still the easiest plan
- Sukhna Lake after dark — the path stays open till 8pm and it's lovely
- Sector 26 and Sector 9 — where most of the bars and breweries are
- Elante — late films, and the food court runs late
- Pinjore Gardens lit up — worth the 22km if you've got a car
- The Geri Route — Sector 10 and 11, the old cruising stretch, street cafés on both sides
One honest note: Chandigarh nightlife is mostly bars and malls. Gigs and live music do happen — but they're announced a week ahead, so you have to be looking.

Free places to visit in Chandigarh¶
A full day out here can cost you nothing but petrol:
- Sukhna Lake
- Rose Garden
- Capitol Complex (free with ID)
- Open Hand Monument
- Sector 17 Plaza and the musical fountain
- Leisure Valley
- Garden of Fragrance
- Butterfly Park
That's eight places, ₹0 in tickets.

One day in Chandigarh¶
If you've got a single day and you don't want to waste it, do it in this order. Keep it to a weekday so the Capitol Complex is properly open.
Morning
- 9:00 — Rock Garden, before the heat and the crowd
- 11:00 — Le Corbusier Centre, quick
- 12:00 — Capitol Complex tour (register by 11:45)
Afternoon
- 2:00 — Lunch in Sector 17
- 3:30 — Government Museum, or Rose Garden if it's a Monday
Evening
- 5:30 — Sukhna Lake, walk the full path
- 7:00 — Sector 17 for the fountain and dinner
That's the best of the city in one day without rushing. Skip the Capitol tour and you've got room for the zoo.

Doing Chandigarh on your own? Turning up somewhere alone is completely normal — most people at a run, a class or an open mic came by themselves. How to meet new people →
What to do when you've already seen all of it¶
Here's the thing about a list like this. It works once.
If you live in Chandigarh, you did Rock Garden in school. You've walked Sukhna more times than you can count. Sector 17 isn't a plan, it's just where you end up.
And the lists don't help you, because every single one of them is written for someone arriving on a Friday with two days to spend. Nobody writes for the person who's already here.
What actually changes a weekend isn't a new place. It's a new thing happening at an old one:
- A 6am run with forty other people at the lake instead of walking it alone
- An open mic in a Sector 9 café on a Thursday
- A badminton or football game that needs one more player
- A pottery class, a chess night, a flea market, a gig on somebody's terrace
None of that is on a tourist list, because none of it has a permanent address. It's happening this week and then it's over.
So what is Gigavent?¶
It's an app for exactly this problem.
Right now, finding a small event near you means checking four Instagram pages, two WhatsApp groups and a poster somebody saw once. Most things never get found at all.
Gigavent puts them in one place:
- See what's near you — sorted by what's on today, this weekend, this week
- Know before you go — time, place, what it costs, how many people are coming
- Find your kind of thing — runs, gigs, matches, classes, markets, house parties
- Go alone if you want — most people do, and that's the normal way to start
- Or host your own — put up a game, a jam or a class in a few minutes and let the people who want it find you
It started in the Himachal hills and it's built for people who live somewhere, not people visiting for two days.
Have a look at what's happening in Chandigarh, or put something up yourself.
And if you've just moved and don't know anyone yet, we wrote a whole thing on how to meet new people that isn't "download an app and hope".

Questions people ask¶
How many days do you need in Chandigarh?¶
Two is comfortable. One is enough if you follow the plan above and skip the day trips. Three if you want Morni Hills and Pinjore as well.
What's the best time to visit Chandigarh?¶
October to March. Pleasant days, cool evenings. February–March adds the Rose Festival. Avoid May and June — it crosses 44°C and the gardens stop being fun.
What is Chandigarh famous for?¶
Being planned. Le Corbusier designed it from scratch in the 1950s, and it's the only Indian city laid out in numbered sectors. That, plus Rock Garden and the gardens.
Which places in Chandigarh are free?¶
Sukhna Lake, Rose Garden, Capitol Complex, Open Hand Monument, Sector 17 Plaza, Leisure Valley, Garden of Fragrance and Butterfly Park. Full list above.
What's closed on Mondays in Chandigarh?¶
The Government Museum and Art Gallery, and most other museums. Gardens, the lake and Rock Garden stay open. Capitol Complex is open Monday — in fact Monday to Friday is the only time you can go inside.
What can you do in Chandigarh with friends?¶
Sukhna in the evening, Sector 17 and Sector 26 at night, Morni Hills if someone has a car, and Chhatbir Zoo for a full day. For anything with a date on it — gigs, tournaments, open mics — check what's on this week. If you're all just stuck indoors, here are things to do when you're bored.
Is Chandigarh worth visiting?¶
For two days, yes. It's clean, walkable, cheap and unlike anywhere else in India to look at. For a week, add Shimla or Amritsar.
Before you go. You now know what Chandigarh has. What changes every single week is what's happening in it — and that's the part no list can tell you. See this week in Chandigarh →
